〈백년 여행기‒프롤로그〉는 구전으로 전해져 내려온 백년초의 이주 설화에서 출발한다. 이 설화는 200여 년 전 선인장 씨앗이 멕시코에서 쿠로시오 난류를 타고 밀려와 머나먼, 낯선 땅 제주도에 뿌리내렸다는 이야기를 전한다. 백년초는 백 년에 한 번씩 꽃이 핀다고 하여 붙여진 이름으로 멕시코에서는 노팔 선인장이라고도 불린다. 2022년, 작가는 제주도의 한 레지던시에 9개월 동안 머물며 백년초 마을을 방문하게 되었다. 그곳에서 발견한 이 식물들의 불가해한 이주 이야기에서 작가는 모순된 경로로 이루어진 한인들의 멕시코 이주라는 주제에 자연스럽게 다가가게 되었다.
〈백년 여행기‒프롤로그〉에서 작곡가가 만든 음악과 이에 조응하는 마임이스트의 손 퍼포먼스 무대는 백년초의 이동 이야기를 더욱 설화적이고 극적인 방식으로 제시한다. 퍼포먼스로 전이된 백년초의 초현실적 여행기는 20세기 초 비합리적인 방식으로 멕시코로 자신들의 뿌리를 옮겨가야 했던 한인들의 이주기를 중첩시키며, 이동을 둘러싼 모순된 역사와 기이한 상황들을 상연한다.

The starting point for One Hundred Years of Travels–Prologue is the migration tale about the migration of the prickly pear cactus that is told to have come from a cactus seed carried over on the Kuroshio Current over two hundred years ago to take root in the distant and unfamiliar environment of Jeju Island. The Korean name of the prickly pear cactus is “baengnyeoncho,” or “hundred-year plant,” because its flowers were said to bloom once a century; in Mexico, the same plant is known as the nopal cactus. In 2022, the artist had the opportunity to visit ‘the prickly pear cactus village’ during a nine-month artist residency in Jeju. The inscrutable original story behind the plants led him closer to the story of Koreans who migrated to Mexico through contradictory channels during the late stages of the Joseon Dynasty.
In One Hundred Years of Travels–Prologue, the
combination of the artist’s musical composition and
the corresponding hand performance by a mime artist emphasizes the legendary aspects of the prickly pear’s migration story and transforms it into theater. The performance version of the cactus’s surreal journey is juxtaposed with the story of Koreans’ migration to Mexico in the early 20th century, leaving their roots behind, thereby presenting the conflicted history and bizarre situations associated with the migration.
